This book review introduces Lin Chao-chen’s “How Did We Lose the Realm of Journalism?”, assessing it as an interwoven account of a journalist’s professional life and four decades of media transformation in Taiwan. Beginning with the journalistic idealism that emerged after the lifting of press restrictions and the liberalization of electronic media, the book traces media commercialization, competition among cable television news channels, sponsored news content, the migration of advertising revenue to digital platforms, the algorithmic dominance of platform companies, and the disruptive impact of generative artificial intelligence on the news industry. This review recognizes the book’s comprehensive documentation of the structural decline of Taiwan’s news industry and suggests that future research should further examine how AI agents, video creators, and the branding of individual journalists affect news production, labor relations, and the public information ecosystem.
